Most of us probably don’t spend much time thinking about how we brush our teeth and the technique we use each time, but as your dentist will tell you, your brushing technique actually matters a great deal, as does how often you brush and for how long you brush. To celebrate Dental Health week we will be sharing some tips on how you can reach your oral health goals Anywhere Anytime.

Time: For maximum benefit from brushing, you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes every morning and every night.

Brush: Generally you should be using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head that also has a flexible neck. These toothbrushes are designed to remove the plaque and debris from your teeth without damaging your teeth and gums. Although speak to your dentist about which brush is right for you.

Technique: Follow a system when you brush your teeth, starting at the back of your mouth with the toothbrush bristle at the gum line on a 45° angle. Brush gently in a circular motion. Take care not to scrub too hard from side to side, as this can cause your gums to recede, as well as damage your tooth enamel. When brushing make sure that you brush carefully along the inner, outer and chewing surfaces, making sure you tip the toothbrush so you can reach the inner front areas of the teeth, which are often missed.
Your Tongue: Bushing your tongue reduces the bacteria in your mouth and helps your breath stay fresh. So while it might seem strange at first it is good to include it in your routine. To brush your tongue push the bristles on the tongue and scrape gently forward.

Tip: When you are done brushing your teeth don’t rinse with water – leaving the toothpaste on your teeth can provide your teeth with some extra ongoing protection.
